History of Halfords

The distinctive pale orange and black corporate colours of Halfords are now a common sight on the roadsides and in the retail parks and shopping centres of Britain. The business is all about Life On The Move, offering motoring, cycling and touring products and services, ranging from spare parts and accessories to repairs and safety checks.

Founded in Birmingham way back in 1892 as a wholesale ironmongers by Frederick Rushbrooke, it wasn't until the business moved to Halford Street in nearby Leicester a decade later that the business took on its now familiar name and started selling cycling products.

Over the next century, the business expanded rapidly across the UK and Republic of Ireland and extended its product range to include motoring. Milestones were reached in 1931 when the 200th Halfords store was opened, and again in 1968 when the store count hit 300.

In 2010, the company bought out the Nationwide Autocentre MOT chain and rebranded many sites as Halfords Autocentre garages. These gave the business an additional arm to sit alongside its well-established chain of retail stores. There are currently over 250 Halfords Autocentres throughout the UK, where experts are on-hand to offer MOTs, car repairs and servicing to both retail and fleet customers.

Halfords remains one of the most established automotive retailers in Britain, illustrated by its status as a London Stock Exchange FTSE250 company. Across many product categories, the business remains the number one choice, thanks to the trust the brand has earned by delivering good value and great quality for well over a century.

Delivery Information

Need something delivered right away? Or can you afford to wait a few days? Whatever your delivery timescale, Halfords offers a huge range of delivery options.

For next day delivery, orders need to be submitted by 6pm and will be sent via courier, and require a signature upon receipt. The usual charge for this speedy service is £4.99.

If you're out and about and need the peace of mind of knowing your items will be delivered at a time when you're at home, you can choose Named Day delivery, which covers Mondays to Fridays and costs £4.99. For an extra £2, this service can be extended to include Saturdays.

If you order something bulky that won't fit on a courier's bike or in their bag, they offer a 3-day delivery service with prices starting from £39.99.

Bike parts, accessories and clothing can be ordered online and collected in store for free, or delivered to your home within 4 working days (also for free if the items ordered are valued over £30).

Returns Policy

Be sure to keep your receipt and not open your new purchase if you're not sure about it. That's because if you do need to return anything, Halfords will need proof of purchase and all the original packaging.

To get a full refund, you must return items within 28 days of delivery. You can drop unwanted items back at any Halfords store. If you choose to post them back, you will need to cover the cost of postage.
