History of Matalan

Matalan is a familiar and popular household retail name supplying good quality fashion and homewares at great value prices. Matalan first opened its doors as a retail outlet in 1985 in Preston, after founder John Hargreaves decided to base his new business model on 1970s out of town budget US retailers. By 1995, Matalan had a store presence of 50 outlets and in 1997 its headquarters were moved from Preston to Skelmersdale to cope with the needs of the quickly growing business and to link up with a large new distribution centre.

Matalan has taken on a number of new ventures over the years, some of which have been discarded. M Party was a dedicated party accessories department which opened in the flagship Preston store in 2007. It was rolled out into more than 50 stores during 2008 but was shelved by 2011. Matalan also dipped into the mobile phone market in 2008 but this has since been discontinued.

At the end of 2007, Matalan invested profits back into the company by introducing a stylish new image across its stores. In 2010, discussions took place for a buyout of the business, but the interested parties and founder John Hargreaves were unable to agree on a price and instead, Hargreaves put more of his own capital back into the company.

Matalan maintains its ethos of providing excellent value for money on quality brands by keeping overheads low compared with high street stores by buying direct from the manufacturer, as well as focusing on strengthening its online sales and keeping its outlets in low cost, out of town locations. Matalan's reputation as an affordable fashion retailer continues to grow and it now has over 200 stores across the UK and a strong online presence where voucher codes can be used to get a percentage off your order or even free delivery!

Opening Times

Store opening times differ from store to store, with some stores opening or closing at later times. However, generally Matalan stores are open at the following times:

Delivery Information

Home delivery is available Monday to Saturday between 8am and 8pm. Free standard home delivery is available on orders over £50. For orders under this value standard delivery costs £3.95 and takes three to five working days. For orders placed before 5pm, next day delivery is available for £4.95. Next day orders placed over the weekend will be delivered on the following Tuesday. In some areas, delivery services are restricted or unavailable, such as in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and British Forces Post Office addresses.

As well as home delivery, a click and collect service is available in store, Monday to Friday and is free of charge. Click and collect items are delivered into your local store within three to five days and remain available for collection for up to 28 days.

Returns Policy

Items can returned either in store or by post for up to 28 days after purchase. Returns should be in re-saleable condition and accompanied by a receipt or delivery note to be eligible for a full refund. If bought as part of a multi-buy offer they will be refunded at the offer price, and if there is no receipt, gift vouchers or an exchange will be offered at the most recent listed price. Refunds will be issued to the original payment method.

Exclusions to Matalan's refunds policy include items such as pierced earrings, underwear, swimwear, fragrances and cosmetics, hair accessories, hats, quilts, pillows, DVDs, confectionery and hosiery. A detailed list of exclusions is available on the website. Gift vouchers are also non-refundable.

Returns made by post should be securely wrapped and accompanied by proof of purchase and sent to the address given on the Matalan website. Exchanges cannot be made by post and returns for exchange should be taken to your nearest store.

Matalan's website is Verisign secured to prevent loss of personal and payment data during the checkout process. Payment is also available via PayPal.

Unfortunately Matalan has received some negative reviews from customers on Trustpilot (https://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/www.matalan.co.uk) but it is worth bearing in mind that people are often more motivated to leave negative reviews than positive feedback following a purchase and many thousands of satisfied customers would not have left any review.
