History of TJ Hughes

TJ Hughes is known nationwide today for offering leading brands with significant discounts off the recommended retail price. The discount department store has been trading for over a century.

It all began in 1912 for TJ Hughes, with a shop set up on Liverpool's busy London Road by Thomas J Hughes, who remains the discount chain's namesake to this day. The small store traded well from its small location within a building called Audley House.

A larger neighbour in the building was chain store Owen Owen and in 1925, this larger chain decided to relocate to larger premises. As a result, Audley House was put up for sale.

This was a threat to TJ Hughes, but the building failed to sell. It was for that reason that the Owen Owen chairman of the time, Duncan Norman, went to see Thomas J Hughes. He was so impressed with the running of the business that he decided to offer a deal. He would allow TJ Hughes to expand within the building if Owen Owen could own a part of it.

It was then that TJ Hughes turned from a small shop into a department store. The business continued to expand until it was sold in the 1980s.

TJ Hughes floated on the stock exchange in 1992 before being acquired by JJB Sports in 2000 for an impressive £42 million. It was then sold again in 2002 and grew to huge numbers of chains. It set a 200 store target.

However, business did not continue in such a straightforward manner for TJ Hughes and the company was bought by Endless in 2011, a firm who who specialises in turning around struggling businesses. Later that year, however, TJ Hughes went into administration with a risk to some 4,000 jobs nationwide.

Things have since turned around slightly, however. With the sale of some stores things slowly began to improve and the company was brought out of administration. Although the chain now has fewer stores, it is growing again, with new shops opening regularly.

Returns Policy

You can return items to TJ Hughes providing you do so within 14 days of receiving them in in a condition in which they can be sold. That means the item must be in its original packaging and tags must be included and there must be no damage or wear.

This right to return applies to both faulty and non-faulty unwanted items. But in the case of non-faulty items, some exceptions apply. You can't return non faulty:

• Perishable items• Fragrances or cosmetics (for hygiene reasons)• CDs or DVDs if there is any sign they have been opened• Flat pack furniture that has been in any way assembled, even if assembly is not complete• Any other item that can't be resold for hygiene reasons.
