History of Thomas Cook

Thomas Cook started running short rail excursions from Leicester to Loughborough in 1841, and since then his company has grown into one of the biggest names in travel. Thomas followed up that first rail excursion by promoting trips to the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in 1851, taking more than 150,000 travellers from Yorkshire and the Midlands to the historic London event. In 1871 the company became known as Thomas Cook & Son when John Mason Cook joined his father as a business partner. Thomas Cook passed away in 1892, but his company grew from strength to strength during the 20th century. It began offering winter sports holidays, trips by air and safaris on the African continent.
